Addressing the theme 'A Mothers Life Is Precious'. My Entry Rationale: The world's wealth and resources are so unevenly distributed that where a woman lives may determine whether she will survive childbirth and motherhood. Using the symbolic imagery of a desert, where life hangs in critical balance, this design draws attention to one of the most overlooked problems of our time. This poster also uses the timeless figuration of a feminine landscape to draw a parallel between the health of the planet and the health of the world's mothers. It’s four issues were distributed for free, each copy lying on its back in a missionary position, preaching the mixed message. It was not built to last. Ink faded quickly. Exposed to the sun it yellowed. It’s shelf life was short. Publishing has very little to do with making things permanent and everything to do with bringing people together, if only for brief moments. In this sense, WON magazine was the paper tablecloth under the lazy-susan of life. Its ideas and images splattering the pages like chilli wontons and wine, evidence of a shared experience that will inevitably lead to other things. WON magazine is proof that ideology and aesthetics are often linked and that when oceans prevent intimacy it is nice to lay yourself down on a printed page and see who else will lie down next to you.
